ZAP (Zeroes Aren't Permitted) Fridays
We will be starting something new here at school this quarter. We are calling it ZAP (Zeroes Aren’t Permitted) Fridays.
Each Friday, for the rest of the year, students that are caught up on their class assignments will get to go to an activity of their choosing from a list that was given to them earlier this week.
Some of the activities are: Cooking, Jazz Band, Zumba, Chess Club, Art, 3 on 3 Basketball and more. The students that aren’t finished with the majority of their assignments will go to the ZAP room, a study hall, to finish their work for the 40 minutes while their friends are enjoying their activities.
This doesn’t impact you as parents with a change of the school day. We have taken a few minutes out of each school period to add the additional ZAP period. Finally, and most importantly, this came about because too many students, over 25% in 7th and 8th the grade just weren’t turning in their work to earn a passing grade. We had to try something different to motivate students to complete their school work. Although, we have yet to have the first ZAP Friday on the February 10th, I’m already hearing from teachers that students are turning in more school work than they have all year.

Counselor Ellen Winn earns prestigious title of National Board Certification
Congratulations to Ellen Winn who recently earned the highest credential available to American educators by recently becoming a National Board Certified Teacher through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Her certification is as a school counselor.
While state licensing systems set the basic requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certified Teachers have demonstrated advanced teaching knowledge, skills and practices. NBPTS certification identifies qualified teachers as leaders in their field, much like the certifications earned by experts in law and medicine. Completion of NBPTS's National Board Certification process signifies that the certificated teachers have developed and demonstrated the skills required of a true education professional.
Mrs. Winn comments on the National Boards process: "This was the most rigorous professional growth program I have ever undertaken but it was also the most rewarding. National boards helped me to reflect on my counseling practices and challenged me to expand my skills as I work with students, parents and staff. In national boards you have to examine everything you do and articulate why you do the things do and what the benefit is for the student. It also caused me to think and learn about a variety of cultures and cultural values and how to meet the needs of these students and their families. A part of National boards was difficult for me was sharing my accomplishments. National boards pushes you to examine your strengths along with your weakness and then pushes you a step further to make a plan to continually improve upon these."
Educator often get advanced degrees which for the most part involve taking course work for further acquisition of content and practices. The N
ational Board Certification requires demonstration of competency. In her area of school counselor, with focus on early childhood through young adolescence she had to provide evidence of competency in eleven areas from broad areas as delivering a school counseling program, working with families to more specific specialties as human growth and development to improve student learning and well-being. Specific requirements. This process involved examinations, extensive papers, peer reviews and submitting video segments of her in action. She is only the second counselor in Longview School district to receive this level of certification.

students build essential confidence and knowledge to face challenges in whatever they

Attendance Info...
Please inform the school if your child is absent by calling 577-2702. You can reach us during office hours -- 7:30 to 3:30. Outside of office hours we have voice mail, so please leave a message. We retrieve our messages first thing in the morning. In addition to reporting absences, also call to report if your child will be late for school or needs to be dismissed early for an appointment or some other reason. The best way to request that your child be dismissed early is to send a note that day and ask your child to check in at the office when they arrive. We can then give them a pass to get out of class at the designated time.
In addition to calling when your child is absent, sending a note with them when they return helps to ensure that our attendance records are complete and accurate.
Thanks for your cooperation!
(Please note that the number in the phone book (577-2706) is not correct.)
