The Interview Thank You Letter

Following up an interview with a thank you letter is crucial in showing you are a serious job applicant. This is your opportunity to make a more lasting impression on your interviewer and to remind him or her of your strengths.

In the letter, refer specifically to what was discussed in the interview -- something you learned or appreciated and comment on what you took away from the interview. This will also give you the opportunity to clarify something said in the interview or to add something you left out. Finish the letter with your phone number and times you can be reached.

It is a good idea to complete the thank you letter the day of the interview or the next day and to mail it immediately. If you don’t have a mailing address, simply call the office you went to and talk to the receptionist. Fill out the envelope carefully -- or even better, type it -- with the interviewer’s name, the full name of the company, and the complete address.

You should keep the thank you letter short -- no more than one page. It should be typed and printed on nice quality paper with dark ink. Finally -- don’t forget to sign it!

Once you have completed the interview thank you letter, you are done with the process.  Now you can only wait and hope that your credentials and qualities land you the job.  If so, great!  If not, try, try again.

If you keep in mind all of the lessons presented on these career portfolio pages, you should find success in your job search sooner than later!
